Product description

El Mero Mero Espadin Mezcal, a creation from San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca, embodies the unique terroir of its region. This mezcal is noted for its complex flavor profile, crafted from 100% Espadin agave that matures around 7 years, a process hastened by the region's low rainfall. This environmental stress on the agave results in a higher sugar content, which is evident in the mezcal's flavor.

The tasting experience of El Mero Mero Espadin is marked by its full mouthfeel and good structure. Reviewers have highlighted its diverse flavor notes, including light honey, banana cream dessert, smoke, anise, and herbal and nutty undertones. Some reviewers have detected a burn, which is not unpleasant, and adds to the mezcal's complexity. The nose is described as having a grassy aroma, with a palate that features a rock candy sugar pop, anise, and black licorice.

El Mero Mero Espadin pairs well with a variety of foods. It is particularly recommended with moles, adobos, spicy seafood, or habanero, enhancing these dishes with its congruent aromas and a very long finish. The mezcal's production process, overseen by Maestra Mezcalera Hidelberta Martínez Hipólito, respects the traditions of artisanal mezcal production. It involves grinding with a tahona mill, cooking in an earthen pit using local pine wood, open fermentation in encino oak wood vats, and double distillation in a copper pot still.

This mezcal has been appreciated for its evolving complexity over time. Initial impressions might not be distinct, but as it opens up, the mezcal reveals a mix of licorice and Espadin, with notes of sea salt, buckwheat honey, and a hint of citrus. The finish is characterized by good smoke and a medium linger.

The bottle and label of El Mero Mero Espadin, featuring artwork by Carlos Zerpa, reflect the cultural richness and artistic heritage of Oaxaca. This mezcal, conceived, distilled, and bottled in San Dionisio, Ocotepec, is a testament to the meticulous craft of mezcal-making and the rich flavors of Oaxaca's agave
