To make this exquisite liquid, mature Laphroaig previously aged in refill hogsheads was transferred into first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and refill quarter casks. Patiently aged in Laphroaig’s famous Warehouse No. 1, these casks were then hand selected for a final maturation. This rare whisky features a touch of Laphroaig’s trademark peat smoke tempered by lime and sea salt. Each and every sip will be well worth the wait.
Nose: Ash and iodine on fresh sea air, at the same time some fruity notes. The nose quickly gets used to the pleasant peat smoke, followed by mango, peach and guava, some papaya and apple, juicy apricots and a light hint of plum plums. Behind it I find cedar wood, salt and wakame. The smoke just lingers in the background.
Palate: An oily mouthfeel. The Laphroaig starts with sea salt and seaweed, cedar wood and apple aromas. In addition mango and blood oranges, some ham and plantain. Add a bit of chimney ash and peppermint, and a very harmonious wood spice joins in.
Finish: Medium length, smoked eel and sea salt, cold mint tea with a slice of lemon
Reminiscent of the rich salinated waters of the Firth of Clyde.
