Pours a luxurious chocolate-brown color with a maple syrup like viscosity. The visuals on this are excellent, a good swirl shows off how concentrated the color is throughout and the thickness coats the glass like few whiskies I’ve seen before. On the nose I get aromas of bran muffins, pumpernickel, snickers bars, molasses, grilled peaches, circus peanuts, dark peanut brittle and a touch of redwood and cedar. The aromas are incredibly enchanting and interesting, thought provoking for me as I’d love to figure out the source. It reminds me a little of our exclusive Balcones barrel in that the oak profile is so unique and concentrated. We don’t know what Texas based distillery is producing this but it’s apparent extremely hot summers played a role in its maturation. On the palate I get extra caramelized salted caramel, salt water taffy, vanilla bean, creme brulee, honey roasted peanuts, fudge, vanilla pudding and a hint of sage and cardamom. I almost can’t put into words how good this is. There is a touch of saw dust mid-palate that brings great compelity to an otherwise decadent-dessert inspired masterpiece. As I keep sipping I get notes of pecan pie and pedro ximenez sherry. The finish gives a little zing of wheat bread crust and peppermint candy. It lingers on the palate for hours and has an incredible smoothness at barrel proof. Finishing these already heavily aged bourbons an extra 2 and a half years has done wonders for this double oaked J.W. Kelly single barrel. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
