Product description

Plymouth Gin is a unique style of gin that originates from the city of Plymouth, England. Unlike London Dry Gin, which is a style rather than a geographical indication and can be produced anywhere, Plymouth Gin must be made in Plymouth. This distinction is not just geographical; it extends to the flavor profile and production methods of the gin as well.

Historical Significance:

Plymouth Gin has a rich naval history, closely associated with the British Royal Navy. Its production dates back to 1793 at the Black Friars Distillery, which is the oldest working gin distillery in England. The connection with the Royal Navy helped Plymouth Gin become widely distributed across the globe in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Production and Flavor Profile:

Plymouth Gin is known for its distinctive taste, which is slightly less dry than the more common London Dry Gin. It is characterized by a rich, smooth body and a balanced juniper flavor, complemented by a blend of botanicals that include coriander, cardamom, and citrus peels, among others. The water used in its production, sourced from Dartmoor, is renowned for its purity and contributes to the gin's distinctive character.

One of the key differences between Plymouth Gin and London Dry Gin lies in the botanicals and the distillation process. While both gins include juniper and other common gin botanicals, Plymouth Gin has a more earthy and soft juniper presence compared to the typically more pronounced juniper and citrus notes of London Dry Gins. Furthermore, Plymouth Gin's recipe and distillation process are closely guarded secrets, contributing to its unique flavor profile.

Legal Protection:

Historically, Plymouth Gin enjoyed a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, which meant that it could only be produced in Plymouth. However, as of my last update in April 2023, this status was voluntarily given up by the brand. Despite this, the tradition continues, and Plymouth Gin is still only produced in its namesake city.

Legacy

Plymouth Gin stands out from London Dry Gin due to its geographical production constraints, its historical ties to the British Royal Navy, its unique blend of botanicals, and its slightly less dry flavor profile. It remains a favorite among gin enthusiasts and mixologists for its versatility in cocktails and its smooth, distinctive taste.
